King of Glory

THE TEST

A self-righteous Jewish lawyer and teacher of the Law of Moses wants to "test" (sic) Jesus. He asks Jesus how one might receive eternal life. To this Jesus replies, "You're the expert, you tell me." The smug lawyer says, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind…Love your neighbor as yourself." Jesus then says, "Do that and you will receive eternal life."  The expert lawyer replies, "Who is my neighbor?" (Luke 10:25-29)

Really? A man of his intellect and expertise has never thought about that?

To answer the smug lawyer's question Jesus tells a story about a traveler who is attacked by bandits, beaten, robbed and left for dead (Luke 10:29-37). A Jewish priest sees the man, crosses the street and passes by him. A temple servant sees the man, looks him over, crosses the street and passes by him. Last, a hated Samaritan sees the man and has "COMPASSION." He bandaged the man's wounds, put him on his own donkey and took him out of harms way to an inn. There he continued ministry to the man. The next day the Samaritan left the man in the care of the innkeeper. He paid his bill and promised to pay more if it was needed. Jesus stoped there and asked the Jewish lawyer, "Who was the neighbor?" 

Jesus is really not answering the lawyer's question. He is asking his own. 

The lawyer answers Jesus' question as we all would, or should. The neighbor is the one who helps; the one who shows compassion for others irregardless of race, creed or religion. The neighbor is the one who will go above and beyond the norm to help. The lawyer's view of neighboring seems to have been NOT, "Who can I help" but, "Who would help me?" That is "The Test." The lawyer, as one who supposedly loved God, should have been asking, "What kind of neighbor am I?" 

If we really love God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind, then we would NOT be asking, "Who is my neighbor," BUT "Who can I serve?" "What kind of neighbor am I?" It's interesting that the lawyer didn't ask Jesus how he could love God more. Although, the answer might be (I think), by showing compassion for others no matter their status, education or religious views.

We talk about the indifferent priest and temple servant. We talk about the compassionate "Good Samaritan." We talk about being kind to others and showing compassion. All important truths. But what we seem to miss in this discussion is that the lack of compassion for others likely reveals a lack of genuine love for God - heart, soul, strength and mind. 

The lawyer was probably incensed that Jesus used two Jewish guys in his story and compared them to a HATED Samaritan; that the two Jews were the dis-compassionate ones. What he didn't get was that he was like them. He viewed being neighborly as someone who helps "me." He failed "The Test." What he didn't get was that their (and our) dis-compassionate, selfish examples reveal a much deeper problem - No genuine love of God with heart, soul, strength, and mind. 

"The Test": If I genuinely love the Lord with all my heart, soul, strength and mind, then, yes, I will be the neighbor who shows compassion toward others, even those considered hated and despicable. The test question for me is not, "Who is my neighbor?" "Who will help me?" The test question I must ask myself is, "What kind of neighbor am I?" "Who can I serve unconditionally?" That will also reveal to me a lot about the depth of my love for God. 

Lord, I pray that what I see in my life as compassionate service to others will reveal a passionate love for you. If my compassion is lacking, then Lord, give me a heart that is hot for you.

2016, Does It Matter Who Wins The Election?

I have never been so conflicted about the candidates in an election cycle as I have this one. It has been a real battle of the mind and heart.

I read a quote recently of John Calvin. Calvin was a French theologian and pastor during the Reformation period (circa 1500). He said, "When God wants to judge a nation, He gives them wicked leaders." Actually, those more or less approximate what he actually said in his voluminous work, Institutes of the Christian Religion and in his commentary on Romans. I have read the sections of both these works from which this referenced quote is made. Its accurate.

So here is my take on this and how I think it might relate to this election. I really believe we're at a crossroads in American history. We have these two candidates because for the last 60 plus years and longer, we have been going down a slippery slope of moral and spiritual decay. These two candidates are a reflection of who we have become as a nation. The moral, spiritual bankruptcy reflected in these two candidates has been brought on primarily, I believe, because the Church has become too much like the culture that surrounds it. The church in America has become lukewarm. It is not the "salt and light" that it once was or needs to be. 

Scripture says that judgment begins at the doorstep of the Church ("For it is the time [destined] for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not respect or believe or obey the gospel of God?" (AMP) - 1 Peter 4:17). The Church is complicit in the implementation of the judgment of God and she should not be pointing her finger at a lost and unrighteous world. 

Scripture also says, "If MY PEOPLE [not a lost and unrighteous people] will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from THEIR WICKED WAYS, then [and only then; when MY PEOPLE pray and seek my face] will I hear from heaven and forgive THEM and heal THEIR land.

If you ascribe to what I just said then you would probably agree with Calvin. Eventually judgment will come. I would not at all be surprised if we are headed for a judgment even now given the two ungodly, unrighteous candidates we have to choose from today. 

[May I just say here that it breaks my heart that my children and my grandchildren are having to face such a time as this in America. It breaks my heart that I and my generation are leaving our children with such a world. But there are still things that can be done and I intend to do them.]

However, to the matter at hand:

If God wants to judge this nation by giving us "wicked leaders" then it WILL NOT MATTER which presidential candidate wins. They are both ungodly and unrighteous people. God could use either one to bring judgment on America. Having said that, here is the question for me:

        Would I rather be governed by

                an ungodly, unrighteous Democrat, or

                an ungodly, unrighteous Republican (who, by the way, has a godly and righteous running mate)?

        Either way I cast my vote, God's plan will move forward. But my vote could likely be an indication as to the severity of the judgment that comes upon the Church and this country.

Psalm 33:10,11 says, "The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the people of no effect. The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart to all the generations." It goes on to say in verse 12, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD. "

I guess, and in the spirit of this election cycle, one could say, "The Fix Is In!"

Selecting A Candidate

Selecting the candidate that can best serve as POTUS (or any other office).

I will seek for a godly spirit in those for whom I vote. A reading of 2Timothy 2:16, 22-26 provides me with some clues. Look for a person who: 

exemplifies godly values, 

Is humble in spirit, 

uses reverential/decent language, 

honors God, 

pursues a righteous life and a pure heart, and finally,

is a clear thinker. 

I need to pray also that God would grant wisdom beyond his/her years and experience, exceptional counsel and knowledge of truth to discern between right and wrong. 

Since we're NOT electing a "Pastor and Chief" but a "Commander and Chief," my best candidate may or may not have a personal relationship with Jesus. So I need most of all pray that he/she would have a heart for repentance unto salvation.

I wanted to speak to the difference between liberty and freedom. In researching the subject I found the blog post quoted below. It is excellent and brief. Don't believe I could have done the subject any better justice.

Like many people, I suspect, I’ve always thought of the words Liberty and Freedom as meaning the same thing.  In speeches and written pieces they are used pretty much as synonyms.   But several weeks ago I heard a commentary on NPR (specifics have escaped my memory) in which the commentator distinguished between the words in a way which makes all kinds of sense.

Freedom is a state of being capable of making decisions without external control.

Liberty, on the other hand, is  freedom which has been granted to a people by an external control.

These words are not in opposition.  They don’t fight each other.  To the contrary, they are cut from the same fabric and it is helpful to understand their unique meanings in order to celebrate the freedom we enjoy.The Declaration of Independence declared that the King of England had undertaken such actions as limited the freedom of citizens of the newly-established colony in America.   By his actions the people were restricted and controlled in an unjust way.  The complaint was not just about rules and regulations; it declared that the very nature of freedom had been violated.  One paragraph, toward the end of the document, stated the conclusion:

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. — And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

It is a powerful statement, in which the assembled leadership of the new country identifies the concept of freedom and declares itself to be capable of granting liberty to the people of the emerging nation.  The difference is clear:   people are, by nature, meant to live in freedom, and the new government will grant such libertyto its citizens.

In doing this, the “founding fathers” make clear an important fact, that the purpose of the new nation is to be a place in which freedom is celebrated, and in which a government will be established to guarantee that freedom through the liberty it grants to each citizen.  In saying this, the Declaration establishes the government of the soon-to-be-United States of America as the grantor of liberty … the guardian ofliberty … and the guarantor of those actions required to protect and perpetuate such liberty.   That is a huge point needing to be understood by the citizens of the USA.

There are some who reject the role of government and claim the right to freedomapart from any control or oversight.  The result of such thinking would be anarchy in which individuals and groups within a nation would claim rights and privileges which appealed to them, but which did not guarantee the same rights and privileges to others.    The Declaration of Independence says that in order to assure freedom for all citizens, a government and its various agencies will oversee that freedom by granting liberty to those citizens and doing everything necessary to protect that grant.

This is not a “free hand” extended to government, however.   Every law, every regulation, every action taken by that government must be measured against the question of whether it fulfills that goal and does, indeed, guarantee liberty for the exercise of freedom.  It is a heavy responsibility, and a complicated one.  This is not a tiny, insular nation.  It is vast, complicated, and diverse.  The oversight of libertyrequires a moral, ethical, and intelligent application of law to a complex institution.   All the more reason that those elected to be the leadership of our nation should be selected with care, caution, and without hope of personal gain.  To the contrary, our governmental leaders should be beyond reproach and known to understand the task for which they are selected. They should not be elected in a frivolous way, or based upon purely emotional standards.

Today we celebrate the lives of those who our government, in its wisdom, has called into a service to this nation charged to protect and extend the liberty we have been granted.  It is for that reason that they are honored and their lives are cherished.

The LGBT Tidal Wave - A Moral Tsunami

Mr. Obama, I am broken-hearted that you would be willing to offer up your two daughters to the worst of perversions.

A story of parental betrayal and broken promises - That evening two angels came to the entrance of the city of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he stood up to greet them. He welcomed them and bowed with his face to the ground. “My lords,” he said, “come to my home to wash your feet, and be my guests for the night." “Nah," they said, "We’ll just spend the night out here in the city square. You know, with the wonderful people of Sodom.”

But Lot insisted, "Ooo, that might not be such a good idea."

At last, they went home with Lot. But before they could retire for the night, all the men of Sodom, young and old, came from all over the city and surrounded the house. They shouted to Lot, “Where are the men who came to spend the night with you? Bring them out to us so we can have sex with them!”

Lot stepped outside to talk to them (Really?). Shutting the door behind him and in a hushed and halting manner, he said, “Please, my brothers,” (My brothers?) he begged, “don’t do such a wicked thing. I'll tell you what, I have two virgin daughters. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do with them as you wish.” (based on Genesis 19)

So Lot (a Hebrew, one of God's own) had become so morally blind and bankrupt that he was willing to offer up, betray, his two daughters to be sexually assaulted by the depraved men of the city of Sodom. Read this again.

"I have two virgin daughters. Let me bring them out to you, and 

you can do with them as you wish."

Two years ago, in 2014, after Barack Obama signed a declaration of homosexual rights for the LGBT community I wrote the words below. However, as a matter of decorum and respect for the office of President, I did not publish them. But these words have haunted me ever since. 

With the recent insanely crafted declaration of the President and the DOJ Secretary regarding Federal policy on transgender bathrooms, I can no longer keep my peace. "Politically Correct?" There is NOTHING correct about this. The President and the DOJ Secretary have prostituted [PROSTITUTED] the Constitution of the United States, the Civil Rights Act itself and the sons and daughters of this great nation. 

THIS IS WHAT I WROTE IN 2014

Consider Sodom and Gomorrah. Those cities were under judgment for their perverted sexual 

sin and rebellion against God. How bad was it? How far gone was the "believing" 

community? Consider Lot's words, "Here, take my daughters."

Then I wrote this... 

Mr. Obama has opened wide the gate of nation-wide perversion, a tacit 

national "pastoral" approval of sexual perversion. "Here, Take My Daughters."

Mr. Obama, you have essentially offered up your two precious daughters 
to the most wicked and vile of perversions. But not only your daughters. 
You have taken liberties with my precious daughters and granddaughters 
and offered them up to those same wicked  and vile of perversions.
THAT CAN NOT STAND WITH ME!

America has crossed the line. It did so a long time ago. God has been merciful. I hope it is not too late for my beloved nation, America. But if she would turn to God, if the church of Jesus Christ would be on its face before God now, broken and asking forgiveness, there may still be an out-pouring of his grace and mercy. For the nation of the prophet Jeremiah it was too late. May it not be so for America:

Consider these words from The Lord of Heaven's Armies to Jeremiah 7:

16 “Pray no more for these people, Jeremiah. Do not weep or pray for them, and don’t beg me to help them, for I will not listen to you. 17 Don’t you see what they are doing throughout the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 No wonder I am so angry! Watch how the children gather wood and the fathers build sacrificial fires. See how the women knead dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven. And they pour out liquid offerings to their other idol gods! 19 Am I the one they are hurting?” asks the Lord. “Most of all, they hurt themselves, to their own shame.” 20 So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “I will pour out my terrible fury on this place. Its people, animals, trees, and crops will be consumed by the unquenchable fire of my anger.”

A reading of this entire chapter would be worthwhile and something over which to pray.

Mat 7:1-6; Luk 6:37-42: What goes around comes around (WGACA). If you judge, you will be judged. If you condemn, you will be condemned. If you forgive, you will be forgiven. If you give, you will receive back. You get back what you dish out and it comes back full measure, pressed down, shaken together and pressed again until it is running over in your lap. So what is it you want to come back at you, judgment and condemnation or forgiveness and grace? [WGACA]

Do not be blind to what you do. Others are watching and following. They will go where you go - even into a pit. You're teaching others how to live by how you live. Those who are taught will not rise above their teacher. Texas wisdom says, "If you teach a critter meanness don't be surprised if it learned it's lesson. [WGACA]

And how can you lead a brother to correct some minor thing in his life if you have not corrected the major things in your life? Don't be a hypocrite (a phony; two-faced). First correct what is wrong in your life, then you will be able to help someone else with their problem. This too will come back to you as well." [WGACA]

Who is Jesus to me in all of this? He is my center. He is first of all my standard for my life. Before I even think about making a judgment on someone else or leading someone else or correcting someone else, I must be certain I am consistently pursuing the standard Jesus has set for me. Second, he is my discernment. It is only by his wisdom that I am able to judge anything, lead anything or correct anything. His wisdom comes through much PRAYER [more on this to follow], time in his Word and walking in the Spirit - being filled with the Spirit (knowing God's will; giving praise to God and others; being totally surrendered to him).

"Lord, I pray that my love may abound more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that I may approve the things that are excellent, that I may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God." (Phi 1:9).

Regarding those with no spiritual sensibilities, those indifferent to the things of God, perhaps even hostile, I should not be distracted by dishonorable men. They may blow off my words and efforts to speak life into them. They may perhaps even turn against me. When it comes to knowing someone's heart about the things of God the Holy Spirit is my discernment. He will nudge me when it is time to move away. I should not ignore those who are indifferent or hostile to God. At the same time I should expect the possibility that they may turn on me. If they do, they turn on Jesus, on his message of love and acceptance. But notice now that Jesus leaves this topic an goes immediately into a discussion of persistent PRAYER. Jesus said himself in Mat 17:21 that the really tough ones will only come "by PRAYER and FASTING."

Mat 7:7-12: It is a good thing to persist in PRAYER. Jesus invites his followers to keep on asking, keep on seeking and keep on knocking. Those who continue to ask will receive, those who continue to seek will find. And those who continue to knock will find doors open to them.

Will an earthly father give a stone to a child asking for bread, or a snake to a child asking for fish? If an earthly minded sinful man knows how to give good gifts to his children, how much more would our heavenly Father delight to give good gifts to those who ask of him? [Especially since his Son, Jesus, has given us the direction to PARY and to ask of the Father]

Jesus in me is my invitation to continually, persistently, consistently be asking, seeking and knocking about anything, anyone and everything. He is my assurance that our Father in heaven is willing to give his followers good gifts based on our persistence. "His Word will not return void." If I expect my heavenly Father to treat me so then certainly I should, in turn, treat my children as such. In fact, I should treat all men in this manner. If I can expect good gifts from my heavenly Father then others should expect me to treat them the same way.

And about this persistent asking, seeking, and knocking: James 4:3 explains that our ask needs not to be selfishly motivated but motivated by love. This kind of asking will find an answer (also note Phi 2:3-7; 4:6,7,19).

The whole matter of judging, correcting, facing down adversaries of the Gospel comes down to PRAYER and being motivated by love. When the Church of Jesus Christ gets this right she'll have a much greater impact on the culture around her.

THOUGHTS ON FASTING

Fasting is a process that God uses to bring the believer into being set free from bondage. It is not a thing used by the believer to manipulate or change the will of God; to force God to do something. Fasting is for the believer to be brought into brokeness. In the process the “flesh” is broken and consumed by the Holy Spirit that it might be presented back to God as a living sacrifice, ready for His will to be done.

Isaiah says fasting is not to be instigated by convenience but through brokeness over one’s own sin. It is promised that through this process God will bring change to the life of the believer. We are not to fast for strife and debate (ISA 58:4,5) or to make our voice heard on high. Fasting is not God’s doorbell. It is an inward desire to bring our bodies into subjection, that we might present them as living sacrifices back to the Lord.

Fasting brings through you the ministry of the Spirit of God to others. As your spiritual vision clears you begin to see what God sees through the eyes of the Spirit (EPH 1:8). From there you begin to live by the Holy Spirit regarding others. Biblical fasting brings the light of God exploding in your heart. Isaiah says, “It comes like the morning.” While in that transformed position, your own flesh or personal life is no longer thebroken, contrite spirit of denial of the body’s fleshly desires your will begins craving the will of God, having been able, in a state of self-denial, to hear from God in your spirit man. Your prayer, under those conditions, becomes the will of God as you, in essence “seek first the kingdom of God” and say, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

God promises, as a result of fasting, His life in you and His ministry through you, in agreement with His will and purpose for your birth upon this earth (EPH 2:10). He further promises to be your guide, and in the midst of all tribulation He pledges to make the way of escape. In His daily presence you will be like “ a spring of water whose waters fail not, as springing up within you is the fountain of life that has its source in eternity (JHN 4:14). Then, through your life, God shall bring restoration and will raise up the foundations of many generations. His ministry through you will be “the repairer of the breach, the restorer of paths to dwell in.” This is the promise to you in Isaiah 58 if you will involve yourself in the fast that God has chosen. Fasting will break the body’s (flesh’s) control over the soul, resulting in a union between your human spirit and the Holy Spirit.

So to be used of God we must first see what God sees in our lives. This is the reason for fasting. Denying food is not for the purpose of getting God involved in what we are doing, but to get us involved in what God is doing…His will, that we may be broken before the Lord. Fasting in its right perspective breaks the soul from submitting to the wiles of the flesh and submits it instead to the Spirit of God within (pg77). Brokeness…is the means by which God conveys maturity and develops character. His discipline in the lives of believers brings each into abandonment of self to God in prayer (pg29).“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise” (PSM 51:17).

Achan's Sin & The Hidden Sin of Lust

I want to talk about the hidden sin of lust in relation to the sin of Achan in Joshua 7. If you are a man (or woman) living in a fantasy world of sexual conquest you are headed for disaster. 

Achan's sin was taking things that were dedicated to God. He took what did not belong to him. He stole that which God had dedicated, set apart for the temple. He desecrated that which was sacred. 

When a men and women lust after each other (carry out any sexual fantasies) they are essentially taking what does not belong to them. Sex outside of marriage (real or imagined; any perversion) is a desecration of God's intended plan. Men have selfishly taken, for their own selfish pleasure, what does not rightfully belong to them. They may get away with it for a season but sexual sin and perversion will eventually bring the wrath and anger of God. 

One cannot take what belongs to God, what God has set apart as sacred, expect that it be hidden and get away with it. God will bring judgment on the individual who ignores, defies, and disrespects His natural order of things. 

When a men carry out sexual fantasies and think they are hiding something from God they are not, though they may be hiding it from others. Eventually they will be exposed. They will suffer disgrace, shame, and defeat. Hear these vexing words from Scripture to Joshua, "...Hidden among you, O Israel, are things set apart for the Lord. YOU WILL NEVER DEFEAT YOUR ENEMIES UNTIL YOU REMOVE THESE THINGS FROM YOU." Josh 7:13

This sin of Achan cost him his family's lives, his children's lives, and his own life. It also cost the children of Israel, those around him, their lives. The battle was lost. It caused Joshua to doubt whether God cared for Israel. It created havoc among the children of Israel. 

God destroyed ALL of Achan's family, his cattle, his dwelling, and even the stolen spoils. All vestiges of his existence were erased. Except, of course, a heap of stones (Josh 7:26) and the bad memory of his "troubling" disregard of things sacred (things set apart for God's use). Devastating consequences. 

ASK YOURSELF, "IS IT WORTH IT?"

So to what extreme limits would you go to protect your moral/sexual perimeters? What extreme strategy would you put in place to protect your life, your family, your church, and your community? What are the non-negotiable bedrock issues of your life? 

Here is where I come down:

1. The absolute commitment of my life to the call of God to influence men for Christ;
2. The absolute integrity of my relationship to my wife, my children, and to their families (moral/sexual);
3. The relentless pursuit of work and ministry.

I have a working strategy. I'm not perfect but I will fight to keep my good name, my family, and the integrity of all my associations.

A Strategy For Securing My Moral Perimeter

The spiritual security and legacy of a man depends upon how well he disciplines his body to do the right things.

Paul said, “I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.” 1Co 9:27

To ignore the moral perimeter (includes the imagination – how close to sin can I get without actually committing an act of sin?) is to lose the privilege of telling others about Christ; to see ministry opportunities disappear before your very eyes. It is easy to tell others how to live and then not to take our own advice. We must practice what we preach so as not to lose not only our credibility but also our opportunity. (1Ki 11:1-13)

Sexual sin is probably the greatest threat to any man. Guarding the moral perimeter is critical. A man must maintain discipline and vigilance 24/7. The most vulnerable places for a man is in the work place and on the road.

My Rules Of Engagement

Concerning You:

  1. Do not trust the flesh
  2. Get and keep your focus on God
  3. Get and keep your focus on your wife
  4. Praise your wife; Pray with her regularly; Date her; Honor her publicly

Concerning Other Women:

  5. Keep your door open when meeting them
  6. Respect them as you would a daughter or sister
  7. Do not linger in their cube or office
  8. Eliminate personal/private/leading conversations and places
  9. Eliminate inappropriate touching or hugging
10. Keep conversation limited to business/ministry matters

Nothing less than 100% commitment will keep the moral perimeter secure
